Simon Eccles is the Medical Director for NHS Connecting for Health.  He has responsibility for many clinical aspects of individual programmes in NHS CFH and is directly responsible for the National Clinical Leads.

In addition he is the Senior Responsible Owner for several programmes including NHSmail, and Clinical Dashboards. His interest in health informatics started on becoming a National Clinical Lead with the National Programme for IT in 2004.  

Dr Eccles has a long interest in medical workforce issues. He was chairman of the Junior Doctors Committee of the BMA in 2003-4, and led discussion on the workforce challenges of changing doctors’ post-graduate training and the European Working Time Directive. In October 2003, he took a year out of clinical work to allow him to work on the ‘Hospital at Night’ project as the medical advisor to the NHS Modernisation Agency. He has previously worked as a clinical advisor to the Department of Health Strategy Unit and to NHS Skills for Health.  

Clinically, Dr Eccles continues to practice as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Homerton Hospital in Hackney, North East London. He is a strategy advisor to the BMJ Publishing Group; a non-executive director of Zircadian, a doctors’ rota software company; and trustee of the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund. He is co-author of the Oxford Handbook of the Foundation Programme and joint editor of the best selling careers guide 'So you want to be a brain surgeon'.

He lives in London, collects contemporary British art and maintains a select fleet of classic cars.
